One of Jim’s favorite types of folk art is the Norwegian style of decorative floral painting known as rosemaling. Taken from the Norwegian words meaning “rose painting,” rosemaling originated in 18th century Scandinavia as a local interpretation of broader European art traditions. It quickly spread from urban centers to rural folk and developed several regional forms, each with its own unique style. Rosemaling came to the New World with immigrants in the 19th century, and has since become an important element in the melting pot of styles and themes that is American Folk Art. A great example of Jim’s use of rosemaling can be seen in the new piece “Tis The Season for Loving Hearts” featuring Santa and Mrs. Claus. Look for rosemaling on Santa’s coat and Mrs. Claus’ apron. It’s beautifully done, steeped in tradition and one of Jim’s favorites.
