I’ve always loved history. It was my favorite subject in school, the one class that never felt like work. As kids my brothers and I used to sit together reading the encyclopedia, then make up quizzes to test each other’s knowledge. We probably didn’t realize it at the time, but those moments helped spark a lifelong curiosity about the past.
That love of history has stayed with me. Even today, I almost always have a book going, usually some kind of non-fiction history that lets me step back in time and better understand our world today. That’s one of the reasons President’s Day is especially meaningful to me. The stories of those great men, their leadership, struggles, and ideals, continue to inspire me in my life and work.
Over the years, that has found its way into my art. Two of my favorite designs from years gone by feature George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. There’s something powerful about translating their legacy into art—capturing not just their likeness, but the principles they stood for. Lately, I’ve been thinking about expanding on that idea and creating an entire collection of American heroes. Jefferson would be a sure choice, with Jackson and Roosevelt possibly joining the lineup. It could be fun, and educational too. Let me know what you think… who would you like to see?
God Bless,
