A few years back, I had the great honor of holding one of my signing events at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia. That event was a little different from my usual ones—it was only open to military personnel and their families. What struck me right away was how young everyone was! The room was filled with energy, enthusiasm, and pride. It was a real privilege to spend time with the men and women who serve on the front lines, protecting the freedoms we all hold dear. And I have to admit—it was very gratifying to see that some of those fine young people even knew who I was!

That day also gave me one of the most meaningful gifts I’ve ever received. One of the Marines came up to me and handed me a small lapel pin—an American flag on one side, and the Marine Corps flag on the other. He told me he had worn that pin every day through two tours of duty in Iraq. He wanted me to have it because his wife loves my art. In fact, before he’d deployed she’d bought two identical Angel pieces, one for him to take with and another for her to keep at home. Those Angels gave them a sense of togetherness, a bond that spanned the miles between them.

That moment and his story will stay with me forever. To think that my work could bring a little comfort to a family making such a heroic sacrifice—that’s the greatest honor I could ever receive.

On this Veterans Day, I want to say from the heart: thank you to all who have served, and to the families who stand beside them. Your courage, commitment, and love of country inspire us all.
